John Middendorf
Certificate Program in GIS
I am an engineer and architect, and have recently moved to the beautiful small town of Pagosa Springs, Colorado. With GIS, I am looking to broaden my skills to continue contributing to the community in the surveying and mapping field, with an interest in eventually gaining a GIS Master's degree.

Geography 482 Projects

Project 1: Coordinates and Map Projections
Maps for Pagosa Springs, Colorado. This project looks at two map projections, the Transverse Mercator, used in UTM coordinates, and the Lambert Conformal Conic, used in the Colorado State coordinate system. Learning about the tranformation of unprojected geographical coordinates (Lat./Long.) into a two dimensional projected map form was quite interesting and involves many factors specific to the location that is being mapped.

Project 2: Mapping the Census
The Census has done two things which are useful to mapmakers: one, they have collected public domain deomographic data which can be used to analyze populations in the U.S., and two, they have produced TIGER/line files that uses point, line, and polygon features to represent geographical data in the U.S. This project looks as some of the ways that data can be used to create maps.

Project 3: Investigating Geographic Data
Project 3 helped to to organize a myriad of information I had already been investigating on the web, as well as helped me to find new GIS data resources specific to Colorado. With so many choices out there, with variations in formats and coordinate systems, proper GIS mapmaking requires an organized search for information.
